Every year on July 4th, the United States celebrates Independence Day. Although hot dogs, fireworks, and parades provide enjoyable family memories, our heroic troops who valiantly defend our country should take center stage during the holiday. There are as many as 2.2 million wounded veterans in the U.S. who live with a variety of disabilities ranging from physical to emotional. They endure these wounds long after they have left the military, and several provisions are made for their sustainability.
If you wish to give back this Independence Day by supporting our troops here is a list of 5 organizations that help wounded veterans:
American Ex-Prisoners of War is a non-profit organization that assists surviving US military and civilian prisoners of war (POWs), notably the elderly and those with medical issues. It was formed in 1942 in Arlington, Texas. Former American POWs from all conflicts, as well as their immediate families, are welcome to join the club. Its service officers have helped POW veterans obtain medical care and other benefits like medical care in VA hospitals and disability payments for injuries and diseases caused by incarceration. These perks are in addition to the usual benefits and services for which veterans are eligible. Widows and minor children of former prisoners of war may be eligible for special privileges and compensation.
The Gary Sinise Foundation was founded on the charitable vision of Gary Sinise, an actor and forty-year supporter of the nation’s military and defence. The Foundation provides a range of activities, services, and events for military injured veterans. It is a non-profit organisation that aids those who make the ultimate sacrifice to defend the US. The Foundation carries out its purpose via a variety of initiatives that provide entertainment, family assistance, and gestures of appreciation to these American heroes. It also constructs specially adapted houses for seriously injured veterans, hosts daylong morale-boosting festivities at military medical institutions around the country, and provides meals to soldiers and their families nationwide. The Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that the sacrifices of veterans are never forgotten.
American Gold Star Moms, Inc. (AGSM) is a private, non-profit organisation, composed of American mothers who have lost sons or daughters while serving in the US Armed Forces. It was founded in 1928 by mothers of World War I casualties and has legislative authorization under Title 36 211 of the United States Code. Membership in the organisation is accessible to any lady who is a US citizen or legal resident who has lost a son or daughter while serving in the US military. This is regardless of the place or time of the military service, regardless of whether the circumstances of death involved hostile conflict or not, and including mothers of those missing in action.
In 2003, a devoted group of military spouses at Camp Pendleton established the Semper Fi Fund. This is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation that offers a range of initiatives to aid wounded veterans from all branches of the US Armed Forces. The initial aim of the charity was to provide urgently needed resources and assistance for post-9/11 battle wounded, critically sick, and catastrophically injured members of the US Armed Forces and their families. Since November 2019, the Semper Fi Fund has distributed 209,000 awards totalling $210 million to 24,000 military men and their families. Additionally, the fund assists in providing housing assistance to injured soldiers and their families, summer camp opportunities for children of wounded warriors, canine assistance, and ongoing transportation assistance, among other unique programmes aimed at easing the transition for wounded soldiers and their families.
The American Legion is a non-profit organisation of the US military veterans based in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is made up of state, U.S. territory, and foreign departments. The American Expeditionary Forces founded the organisation (A. E. F.) in Paris, France 1919 and the United States Congress later established it on September 16, 1919. The Legion members help at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals and clinics in addition to arranging memorial events. It is involved in issue-oriented politics in the US. Its major political activity is lobbying in favour of veterans’ and military members’ interests, including support for entitlements like pensions and the Veterans Health Administration.
