SmartMonitor was created after a single mother reached out to Founder and CEO Anoo Nathan to share her frustrating story. Her son experienced seizures, she was the primary caretaker and she had to monitor him while he slept and she worked. As a result, she was setting hourly alarms throughout the night to check on him – leaving her chronically exhausted. She needed peace-of-mind and the confidence to rest easier.
Anoo discovered this wasn’t an isolated case. She spoke with many other parents and family members who could benefit from an automated solution that could detect unusual movements from various conditions.Families lacked reliable monitoring options, forcing caregivers to sacrifice their own well-being for patient safety.
This gap led to the development of the SmartWatch – the first solution created by SmartMonitor for monitoring symptoms of chronic conditions. The technology provided 24/7 monitoring, allowing families to rest while ensuring their loved ones remain safe.
Since then, SmartMonitor has grown from a single device concept to a comprehensive suite of monitoring solutions, reaching important milestones along the way.

Founded by professionals in neurology, engineering, and business, with the mission to focus on non-invasive, real-time monitoring using wearable technology
Epilepsy Foundation awards SmartMonitor a New Therapy Grant and Epilepsy Therapy Project grants funding to the SmartWatch project, allowing SmartMonitor to recruit clinicians and accelerate pilot testing
Partners with Stanford University and Boston Children’s Hospital, using SmartMonitor’s technology to power their research and clinical studies. SmartMonitor is issued a US patent that covers algorithms for detecting abnormal repetitive movements and transmitting alerts.
SmartMonitor releases the SmartWatch, the first commercially available wearable that monitors for movements of interest
Danny Did Foundation awards SmartMonitor a grant to fund clinical trials at NYU Langone Medical Center using the SmartWatch, and SmartMonitor was the recipient of the CES Health Innovation Award
A SmartWatch study is published (Patterson et al. in Pediatric Neurology) evaluating the algorithm’s ability to detect abnormal movements. Researchers at the University of Virginia reported at the American Epilepsy Society (AES) that adolescents using SmartWatch experience reduced anxiety and more independence.
SmartMonitor pivots from manufacturing hardware (SmartWatch) to developing Inspyre, an advanced monitoring software that runs on popular consumer wearables including Apple Watches and Samsung devices.
SmartMonitor partners with Johns Hopkins for the EpiWatch project, using Inspyre's technology to power their study on wearable movement detection. The company also receives its second patent for improved motion-detection algorithms and caregiver communication methods.
SmartMonitor incorporates user feedback into regular updates, refining Inspyre’s functionality and usability to improve reliability and caregiver peace of mind.
SmartMonitor rebrands Inspyre as “Inspyre, powered by Acuma Health,” adding a refreshed interface and multiple tiered subscription plans. The updates expand features like heart rate monitoring, GPS tracking, and health tools for a more user-friendly experience.
SmartMonitor broadens Inspyre, powered by Acuma Health, to address diverse health and safety needs across chronic conditions and everyday caregiving. The app introduces advanced capabilities such as live geo-location tracking, safe-zone alerts, and expanded health metrics - including heart rate trends, activity monitoring, and medication reminders - to give families and individuals a more complete view of wellbeing and safety.
Today, SmartMonitor continues to honor its founding mission through meaningful partnerships with foundations and advocacy groups, working together to provide grants and financial assistance to families who need our technology most.
